OYAK Beton: From 150 Excel Spreadsheets to One Quantrix Budget Model
In 2018, OYAK Beton, one of Turkey’s largest ready-mixed concrete producers, replaced its Excel budget with one Quantrix model. The Excel budget had grown to more than 150 spreadsheets in 10 interlinked files, with more than 150,000 formulas. With our training and consulting, a team of five people built the complete budget in Quantrix in 10 days. Budgeting had previously taken three months.

What was the problem with the Excel budget?
OYAK Beton runs 60 facilities in 6 regions and supplies large infrastructure projects: bridges, metro lines, tunnels, roads and airports. Management wanted a budget for every facility, rolled up to the regions and the company. The Excel budget could not deliver that:
- more than 150 spreadsheets in 10 interlinked files
- more than 150,000 formulas
- no separate budget for each facility: figures were aggregated only at region level
- manual data consolidation and a budget round of about three months
- a model that was hard to audit
What does the Quantrix model cover?
Client models are confidential. The screenshots on this page show a demonstration model with the same kind of structure, built for illustration. All company names and figures in it are fictitious.
Everything the Excel budget covered, in one file. Its dimensions are facilities grouped by region, products, months and scenarios. For each facility it calculates:
- sales and production volumes, purchased concrete, and transport and pumping with own or subcontracted mixers and pumps
- revenue and raw material costs: cement, fly ash, slag, sand, aggregate and admixtures
- gross margin, variable production and transport costs, fixed costs
- selling and general administrative costs, including head-office costs allocated to the regions
- operating profit, EBIT and EBITDA

Region and company totals are not built separately. They are views of the same model, so a change in one facility appears in its region and in the company budget at once. Accounting data comes in through an integrated chart of accounts.
The model also introduced:
- separate data entry templates for corporate, regional and facility costs
- automatic allocation of corporate overhead to the regions and then to the facilities
- a tool to select and present each account group and subgroup
- strict separation of assumption and calculation matrices
- integrated what-if analysis
- dynamic presentations and reports for senior management

How large is the model?
| Excel budget | Quantrix model | |
|---|---|---|
| Files | 10 interlinked files | 1 file |
| Structure | 150 spreadsheets | 1 multidimensional model |
| Facility budgets | none; region totals only | a budget for every facility, aggregated to region and company |
| Formulas | more than 150,000 | one Quantrix formula replaces 1,440 Excel formulas on average |
Why are there so few formulas?
Because each formula is written once and applies to every facility, product, month and scenario. Formulas use the team’s own names for things, in Turkish, so finance staff could read and check them. In the demonstration model, the concrete sales line reads:
Beton Satis = Satis Hacimleri Mikser::Ozmal veya taseron satisi toplam:Beton Satis Hacmi
In words: concrete sales equal the total volume sold with own or subcontracted mixers. Region totals are one line each, such as Akdeniz = Butce::Sum of Akdeniz for the Mediterranean region.
How was it built in 10 days?
By combining training with consulting. Five people from OYAK Beton took part. They learned Quantrix while the budget model was built together with Tahir Tahirov, who set the structure: which dimensions the budget needs, how the facility, region and company levels connect, and where each input belongs. Because the team built the model with him, they could maintain and change it afterwards.
Already at the training session we recognised the power of Quantrix. Thanks to training and consulting services from Mr. Tahirov, we managed to have training and to create such a large and complex budget within only 10 days.

What changed for the business?
- Time: the budget round fell from three months to ten days.
- Errors: no copied formulas between facilities, so no facility can quietly use different logic.
- Insight: management sees any facility, region or the whole company from the same numbers.
Does this apply to other multi-site businesses?
Yes. Any business that budgets the same way for many sites, plants, stores or ports has the same problem in Excel: the structure is copied once per site. In Quantrix the sites are one dimension of a single model. The same approach is used for port operations at Global Ports Holding and for retail budgeting at Magnum Cash & Carry.
